Review Of Laurie Forest's The Black Witch

Elloren Gardner maybe looks like her grandmother, Carnissa Garner, hero for the Gardnerians, but not just that she doesn't have any magical power, but she wants a peaceful life. Her dream is to became apothecary and she is happy, when she can attend the famous Verpax University, like her brothers. Shock follows shock for Elloren, who lived in a sheltered life in her uncle's house and she has to realise, that she knows very little from the real world. To make things more difficult, the other races does not love Carnissa Garner, as the Garnerians and they are not too welcoming about someone, who is like her. Soon Elloren is surrounded with elves and others, who despise her and to make things worse, she makes an enemy from the possible next Black Witch. Will she be able to survive in this world, where maybe everything she was taught is a lie?

Most of the negative reviews I've read, complained about the racism, and other sensitive topics in The Black Witch. Actually for me, it is not just that not disturbed me, but I found it good, that we can think about serious questions too. Until everything is balanced and well, interestingly written, putting sensitive topics too to a novel is totally ok for me. Not to mention that, that racism for example can be find even in Harry Potter, just think at the purebloods-mudbloods, and I don't remember seeing anybody complain about it. But back to The Black Witch, first I really disliked Elloren. She was everything I despise in a person, whiny and weak, someone, who doesn't even try to stand up for herself, but always runs to others to help her. Next to these, she was selfish and immediately judged others, usually negatively. Luckily after a time she started to change and I could fully enjoy the book, which was good, even that quite predictable sometimes. It even made me cry, which is rare from a novel. The story was interesting, I hope, in the next part we will get know more about the world and its history.

To sum it, I really enjoyed reading The Black Witch and I wait for the continuation of the novel. Even that first the main character was annoying and some of the events are quite predictable, it was a fun book, which I can recommend. The story is good, if you have a long weekend, when you just want to rest and read a book.
