Review of The Confessions Of Young Nero By Margaret George

by - December 14, 2017

Margaret George brings us to the ancient Rome in her historical biography, to get know, how a boy became an infamous monster.

Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, or as most people know him, emperor Nero, was born into the ruling family of Rome and he knew all the dangers and bad sides of this. Not just Caligula caused him trauma, but Agrippina, his own mother, constantly tried to control him. The boy, who loved poetry, music and sports, saw enough to know, that in the glamorous and rotten world of Roman nobility, he can not show weakness. He has to become like them, cruel and cunning, if he wants to survive.

I used to read Claudius from Robert Graves many times, and I was really excited, when I accidentally found this book. For me, it is a little like the continuation of Claudius. We all heard stories about the cruelty of Nero, but now we can read the story from his side. It was very interesting to see another side of Nero and get know a little more from his time through his eyes. This book shows him in a fully new light for me and I have read every chapter curiously. Meantime reading I did often rethink what I know about Nero and his life and how here was written about it.

I liked Margaret George's The confessions of young Nero very much. It was interesting and gave me so many new information. I can definitely recommend it, mostly for those, who like history.
